How to help your autistic child transition from school to college

Photo by Stanley Morales on Pexels.com

We all know how stressful and nerve-wracking going from school to college, picking courses, meeting new people and much more.                                     It can be a very overwhelming time for anyone but for people with autism/autistic people it can be much harder with all the big changes, new teachers and feelings, it can be very overwhelming.                                Here are some tips on how to help your autistic child cope with the change:

  1. Let them be involved: Let them be involved in picking the college that’s right for them, applying for the college etc, letting them do this will help them know that it is happening and they will know where they are going so that it will help them be prepared for the big change.
  2. Transition days: If it is possible have them go to the college for 1 day a week, it can be as little as a half day, this will help then get used to the suroundings so its not as shocking when they go full time.
  3. Let the teachers know their needs: in the transition from school to college it can be hard to know if the new teachers/staff know of their needs and coping strategies so it’s best to let them know directly from you like for e.g “Tom doesn’t like loud noises and they make him feel overwhelmed, so he has ear defenders to help him in these situations”

These are some of the things you can do to help, you can also ask the college to help as well if you are not sure.

Mental health

Hey, sorry i haven’t posted in a while.

I wanted to post something important and i thought mental health would be a good choice, i don’t know why but i just feel like talking about it.

I like to talk about autistic stereotypes and how a lot of them are incorrect, to me mental health is one of them.

The autism stereotype a lot of people think is that we don’t know whats going on and we are always happy, jumping around and don@t understand whats happaning although there are some people with autism who have that there’s also a lot of autistic people/ people with autism who do know whats going on.

When i got got left out of things and called horrorble things behind me back it really took a toll on my mental health and when i tried to talk about it, people kinda just pushed it to one said as i guess they thought that autistic people are always happy and what not.

people with autism can feel/have depression like anyone else!

It might be obvious but i just wanted to tell people that anyway just in case and to let people know that no matter what ur going though ur not alone.

Here are some numbers you can call if you need to talk and that has helped me over the last few months: Samaritans- 116 123 Or if you don’t like calls Text SHOUT to 85258

About me: Hobbies + Update

Photo by Craig Adderley on Pexels.com

Hey, sorry for not posting, I’ve been busy with other things but don’t worry I’m still working on this blog as well.

But while I’m still working on stuff I thought I would do a post about my hobbies and what I like to do in my free time and talk about it.

  1. Art: Art has always been in my life, I like to draw, paint, edit basically anything creative. I’ve also started getting into animating.
  2. Researching: Researching is a big part of my life as its in almost everything I do, and this blog proves it. Although I’m autistic and go to a SEN school I still have to do research on other parts of Autism that I either don’t know or am not sure about, there’s quite a bit of research that go’s into these post.
  3. Baking: I love to bake, my favourite part of baking is the decorating, I love to come up with knew designs and experimenting, I’m actually doing my leavers events cake this year, I will post a picture of the finish cake on my insta @autisticworld6
  4. Sewing: There’s not much to say about this, I just like to sew.

Well those are just some of the things I like, hope you like it.

I will try and keep you guys updated, if you have any questions please feel free to message us on our insta @autisticworld6

Fidget toys

Some people who are autistic/have autism find it hard to concentrate on things and may stim or fidget with their hands or items, this is where fidget toys come in.

The first fidget toy was created in the 1990s with the Fidget spinner which became very popular in 2017, but then became unpopular after about a year due to schools banning them because they could be dangerous.

In 2020 the fidget toy Pop Its become a trend on TikTok, since then more and more fidgets have come out so here is my review on fidgets.

Disclaimer: These are just my opinions and if you have an different opinion then that’s ok, we are all different and we all like different things.

Pop its: Pop its are like a reusable bubble wrap, they come in different shapes, colours and sizes, you press the bubbles like shapes and they make a satisfying sound. It really nice feel to it, and it keeps your hands busy. I really like this fidget, I like the popping them and the sounds it makes, I wouldn’t recommend using them in a quiet place like a library as it can be annoying to some people and you do need to wash them by hand as they will get dirty after a while.

Simple dimple: I couldn’t find out when simple dimples came out but I’m pretty sure it was after the pop it came out, its similar to pop its but it usury as 2 or 3 poppers and is more stiff then pop its. Its smaller than the normal size pop its and easer to handle. I like simple dimples because its easer to take out to places but its not my favourite fidget. The sound is not as nice as the pop its and its louder then pop its.

Infinity cube: Infinity cubes are a shape changing cube fidget toy that can flip and fold an infinite number of times(quoted from google). Its one of my favourite fidgets and can be fun to play with but I wouldn’t recommended for children under 10 as its easy to break and when it does break it has small plastic parts that children could eat or hurt themselves with the sharp edges.

Fidget spinners: fidgets spinners are a small object that can spin around. This is my lease favourite fidget, it has metal parts which hurts if they hit your hands, after a while they get rusty and become very hard to spin and can just stop spinning all together.

These are all the fidgets that will be talking about today, if you guys want me to write about a fidget that I haven’t talked about today please let me know and I can review it.

Activities for children with Autism

Here are some activities and things to make with Autistic children/children with autism or anyone really

1: Make a sensory bottle Sensory bottles are bottles or containers are a homemade sensory toy that anyone can make. It normally has water in it, and any fun materials you’d like, designed to provide a child with non-messy sensory play. There are lots of videos online showing you how you can make them but the fun thing about it is that you can make it any way you want.

2: Memory game Memory games has always been a favourite of mine, Memory games are a game where you have cards and they all have a pair with the same picture, its good for memory Skills, you can buy memory games online or you could make your own.

3: Foot print painting This can be very messy but its still pretty fun, I would definitely do this outside when its sunny.
