Sunflower lanyards are lanyards that means you have a hidden disability which includes Autism.
Autistic people/people with Autism wear these to show people that we might need help.
But it means different things for everyone, like someone might find it hard to be social or talking, or you struggle with money or finding things etc.
We wear them out to places and events.
What should you do if you see someone with a sunflower lanyard?
Not everyone knows what to do if someone has Autism.
Being extra kind and understanding makes us feel confident.
If you see us upset or overwhelmed give us some space and if we have calmed down enough to talk and listen ask if we need anything.
If we seem anxious or nervous, show us that’s it’s okay by just being nice.
If you see anyone making fun or making it a big deal of us having Autism, try and keep them away from us, most of us can’t handle a lot of emotions and get overwhelmed by this and it just makes us sad.
I can only give you tips based on my experiences, this doesn’t apply to everyone who has Autism and we all react to things differently so just knowing that we may need more help is helpful.
